The 13th and 15th century castle

At the top of the Griffon hill stands the 13th and 15th century castle. Listed as a Monument Historique, this ancient fortress of the Comtes de Provence has been regularly restored and preserved during the last twenty years.

Its guardrooms have been equipped to welcome both curious people and History lovers. The tour provides a wide panorama which allows visitors to understand the complexity of the History of the Arles region, heart of Frédéric Mistral’s Provence.

The Towers garden is an invitation to go for a walk in this quiet and green setting designed to please the visitors. Following the Crête path, you will easily reach the Chabaud Peak and the Golden Virgin who protects the city since 1867.

On her pedestal made of cut stone, one can read : “They placed me here to be the guardian of their city”.

The Ancient Centre

The Ancient Centre offers its restored alleys for a stroll during which you will discover the “Hôpital des Pénitents Gris” (The hospital of the Grey Penitents), the Place of the Consuls (built on three levels), the corbelled constructions of a 15th century house and the church of Saint-Denys.

It hides behind its façade from the 19th century a large Romanesque nave and a beautiful Gothic choir. In the side aisles, paneling and canvasses adorn the various altars of farming fraternities.

We advise you to focus on the bell-tower, which was originally a watchtower.
